Young transgender student carried flag in ceremony of transfer of powers

May 8, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Last Wednesday, Sean Miranda, a 17-year-old transgender student from the Technical School of Dos Cercas in Desamparados, was in a Biology class when he was notified that he had been selected to carry the National Flag during the transfer of powers.

Miranda was chosen after meeting the requirement of having participated in a student or community movement with ideas that would help.

It occurred to us, the counselor and me, to make a group of the LGBTI community and thanks to that group they selected me,”

said the student, who at 12 years old revealed feeling trapped in his body.

Despite being very nervous, he said that when the tour started he had a clear message to give to the population:

We have to hold the name of the community high and leave aside the idea that we do not exist, that we are a small group of people,”

said the young man.

At age 15 Sean was proud of his identity and told his inner circle. About two months ago he started hormonal treatments.

In the private sector it’s very expensive, but we’re going to try with the CCSS,”

said Miranda.
