Danish medical technology company will operate in Cartago

May 16, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Danish company Coloplast, specialist in the areas of ostomy and continence within the life sciences sector, chose the province of Cartago to install a manufacturing plant for medical devices, the first of its kind in the Americas.

The company will begin operations in temporary facilities located in La Lima free zone, with the hiring of a first group of 100 Costa Ricans. The workers will develop devices for ostomies (they allow the passage of urine and feces) and urinary continence (control of the bladder or intestines).

The new building in the same industrial park is estimated to be fully operational in the summer of 2020.

For Jorge Sequeira, director of the Costa Rican Coalition of Development Initiatives (Cinde), the fact that Coloplast has decided to settle in Costa Rica is proof of the country’s good positioning in the life sciences industry, one of the most sophisticated and whose quality is highly supervised.

Costa Rica exported $2,847 million in 2017, making medical devices the main national export product.
