Some 32,000 students from 297 schools affected by the recent rains will stay at home indefinitely because many of the educational centers are now difficult to get to, they are flooded, and have no electricity or clean water.
As confirmed by the Minister of Public Education, Edgar Mora, at least 80 institutions are affected by floods, while 210 others have access problems.
In general, there is not a single infrastructure reported with severe damage, however, as the conditions have been maintained, it has been considered appropriate to maintain the closures,”
said the minister.
The educational centers located in the Regional Directorate of Turrialba were the most affected, followed by Súla and Limón. The impact was also reported in Guapiles, Sarapiquí, and San Carlos.
In the case of the Gandoca School, Los Lirios, Tres Rosales, El Tigre, Estero Grande, Cristo Rey, Batán, Venecia, Plástica, and Home Creek, they are functioning as shelters, so they must coordinate with the local emergency committees to take the corresponding actions.
Siquirres College gym suffered serious losses after the collapse of a tree that damaged much of the structure. The school of B-Line, located in Matina, also shows damage after being totally flooded.
