These “irresponsible politicians” affected the country’s image, according to Solís

September 24, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Luis Guillermo Solís, former president of the Republic, said that there were “irresponsible politicians” who, in December of 2017, gave statements and messed up a loan for $1,500 million. Solís blames them for the fiscal gap or missing resources in the 2018 budget.

The former president referred to this issue on Thursday, after the audience he held for six hours in the Commission on Income and Public Expenditure, where he had to give explanations for the shortfall of 900 billion colones in the budget for this year.

According to Solís, at that time several politicians came out to give statements that caused the credit to fail, despite the country “being in very favorable conditions.”

If those resources had been obtained, we would not be here,”

said the former president, who added that the words of these people made the government have to resort to local investors who gave the financing with high interest rates and short terms.

When asked why he did not provide the names of these politicians, he said that

the Bloomberg press section talks about the politician who, in December 2017, was ahead of the elections, it is clear that the name can be clearly identified.”

According to surveys published by the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the National University (UNA), in that period Antonio Álvarez Desanti, from the National Liberation Party (PLN), along with Juan Diego Castro from the National Integration Party (PLN), led the presidential polls.

Former Liberationist Rolando González, referred to the issue on November 20th 2017; he criticized the government and even pointed out that the decision of the loan was atypical and that, at the same time, it was illegal.

In spite of this, Solís left the press conference without giving names, but he took the opportunity to assure that his government was extremely responsible and that they acted in good faith.
