Mechanic given 13 years in prison for hiding drug money

May 15, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Penal Court of Heredia issued a 13-years prison sentence to Hugo Miguel Ángel Jiménez Hidalgo, 46 years old, for money laundering linked to drug trafficking.

The case began in October 30 of 2014, when Jiménez was at home, in San Lorenzo de Flores (Heredia), and two men arrived there and shot him in the stomach.

While Jiménez was being treated by paramedics, judicial agents went inside the house and noticed that a room had been boarded over with laminate. After receiving a search warrant hours later, agents broke through the wall and found a bathroom used as a vault for money and drugs. Scattered inside there were piles of money vacuum-packed. The total amount seized was US$ 3 million, ¢623.000 and a kilo of cocaine.

The sentence was issued last March 10 and it was recently uphold, according to the Judicial Power.
