Civil Registry approved 300 name changes for transgender people

January 18, 2019 by Staff News Writer

In one year, 300 people were able to change their name according to their self-perceived gender identity, as confirmed by the Civil Registry of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

As explained by Luis Guillermo Chinchilla, Senior Civil Officer, a total of 362 applications have been filed since the ruling of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (CIDH), and to date 83% have been completed (300).

Those who wish to change their name to match their gender should go to the offices of the TSE and sign an Informed Consent where they show their express wish to change their name, according to their own gender self-perception.

Chinchilla explained that there is also the possibility of doing the process in court. The change of name by gender can only be done once; and those who wish to revert the decision must carry out a procedure in court.
