Drug Trafficking Commission will have more powers

February 27, 2019 by Staff News Writer

National legislators approved a motion to the reforms of the Legislative Assembly Regulation (RAL) to give more powers to the Security and Drug Trafficking Commission.

The proposal by liberationist Gustavo Viales, who is also president of that legislative forum, reads as follows:

The Permanent Special Commission for Security and Drug Trafficking is created, which will have the function of studying and investigating any political or business link, directly or indirectly related to consumption, drug trafficking, money laundering and its repercussions in Costa Rica, as well as any other matter related to security, crime in general, and crime prevention, including public policies in these matters.”

Viales indicated that this will allow concentrating the issues in that forum, avoiding evaluation in other commissions, such as, for example, the Government and Administration, where bills related to migration are analyzed.

The legislator explained that in 2010, when that commission was created, it had a limited space of action, but now the issue of security and drug trafficking has expanded.
