Poás lagoon is resurfacing

August 1, 2019 by Staff News Writer

After the complete disappearance of the Poás volcano lagoon, it is now resurfacing again. This was reported by the National Seismological Network (RSN) through its website, where they indicated that the lagoon is known for changes in the color and volume of water.

The lagoon is green, but it turns blue in times of low volcanic activity. However, it changes to a creamy gray when eruptive activity is high.

These color changes are generated by several processes, one of them is the contribution of gases (sulfur dioxide) to the water. The rainy season in Costa Rica favors the accumulation of water in the main crater. But geothermal conditions cause water to evaporate quickly,”

explained the experts.

According to records, one of the most important eruptions of the colossus occurred in April 2017. The ash reached three kilometers high and the volcano remained in constant eruption for several days. The lagoon disappeared in June 2017. The eruption also destroyed the dome that had formed since the 1950s.

The rainy season of 2019 is causing the evaporation process to be overcome and the crater is filling with water once again.
