Duke, the puppy whose snout was severed with a machete, is now recovering. Hundreds of Costa Ricans and those who care celebrate his recovery, but regret that the case is still unpunished.

The perpetrator has already been identified. However, nothing can be done because there is not enough evidence to blame him. Therefore, authorities can only ask for him to be evaluated by a psychologist and a social worker.

There is no formal, written complaint. We have tried to convince people to testify, because many people refuse to tell what happened,”

said Ileana Céspedes, coordinator of Animal Welfare at the National Animal Health Service (SENASA).

An administrative penalty brought by this institution could reach 20 million colones, but would also require a long process of investigation.

The case went public last Friday in Tres Ríos, where Duke was found with half his snout dangling due to the machete blow he received.

The puppy underwent surgery on Saturday and now shows a significant improvement.
Céspedes asked the locals to testify if they have any information related to the case. Contact to report is 2587-1600 or 2587-1608.
