29 prisoners have died in Costa Rican prisons in the last five years!

According to the Ministry of Justice, from 2010 to 2015, 29 prisoners died in Costa Rican prisons.

On Sunday, Aldo García Pérez’ death, in La Reforma Detention Center, was reported. The man was attacked with a sharp weapon on several occasions by another inmate surnamed Marín.

It is thought that the victim stole a chain from his aggressor.

García Pérez was a 26-year-old foreigner who had a 20-year prison sentence for murder. The alleged aggressor was sentenced to seven years for aggravated robbery.

The Ministry of Justice reported that 7 inmates died in 2010; 9 prisoners died in 2011; in 2012 there were 5 deaths; by 2013 there were 2 deaths; in 2014 two more prisoners died and last year there were 4 dead people.

During this year 5 inmates have died:

-January 19th: Christopher Fernández (La Reforma).
-January 20th: Rigoberto Matarrita (La Reforma).
-February 19th: David Vargas (Limón).
-Christian Portocarrero (La Reforma).
-August 7th: Aldo García (La Reforma).
