Free Trade Agreement with Korea will benefit Costa Rica

August 16, 2016 by Staff News Writer

After concluding negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Central America and the Republic of Korea, exporters predicted that there will be benefits for a large number of products for instance tropical fruits, coffee and meats.

However, there are still missing many things to discuss such as rules of origin, intellectual property, telecommunications, trade in services, investment, financial services and market access.

During the discussion, they mentioned the possibility of validating expired certificates of origin. Market access was another point of negotiation, where a counter-offer was presented to Korea to favor the closure of this issue at the next meeting agreed in Nicaragua.

Regarding statistics, Costa Rican exports recorded a total value of 51.1 billion dollars in 2015, a figure that is lower than the previous year when exports amounted to 66.2 million dollars.
