Mena: “I can win and be president”

August 19, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Sergio Mena, founding leader of Partido Nueva Generación (PNG), still dreams of becoming President of the Republic. However, he also wants to have a seat in the Legislative Assembly. He prefers not to talk about it, though, because he admits that going around saying he thinks about running for both positions is synonym of weakness and political insecurity.

To be honest, I think I can win. Nobody believed that Luis Guillermo could become president… many people can think of me as a dreamer, but … due to this mess … at the electoral level anything can happen …

declared Mena when asked about the future elections.

In the elections of 2014 he and PNG didn’t have a good performance at all. Mena was backed by 5,882 voters (0.29%) and the party did not have any legislator. At that time, the young group invested 14 million colones.

During mayors’ elections in 2016, the party invested 30 million colones and its strategy gave better results. The group won three mayoralties: Mora and Alajuelita (San José) and Nandayure (Guanacaste).

For the elections in 2018, the plan will be the same: to make Mena popular and to invest money, which is an easy target because as a result of the electoral improvement, the party is entitled to 221 million colones state contribution to political parties.
