Costa Rica closed the doors to 13-year-old boy from Syria

September 6, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica denied a visa to a  13-year-old, Syrian boy, whose parents wants him out of their country. The decision was taken on August 4th by the Restricted Visas and Refuge Commission.

The petition was presented last May by Costa Rican Ismael Alchiekh Badar, president of the Muslim Cultural Center Omar Mosque (Muslim community in Costa Rica organization), who is also the cousin of the Syrian teenager.

The young man goes to school and is an only child. His parents want him to be safe out of the country while the conflict is solved, but they do not want to leave Syria because of their properties.

The document doesn’t grant the custody of the child to the Costa Rican relative, it’s just a power of attorney granted by the father of the child to process the visa approval for his son,”

said Immigration.

According Immigration, Badar Alchiekh Ismael is not entitled to exercise guardianship. For this to happen, it is necessary that both parents of the child lose the custody or their lives.

The resolution can’t be appealed, but allows him to resubmit the petition within six months.
