Turrialba volcano erupted again!

September 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

On September 22nd, at 1:45 pm, Turrialba volcano erupted one more time, as informed by the National Seismological Network (RSN / UCR ICE).

Both the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI) and the RSN had very little visibility in the place due to the wind direction that spread ashes all over the place.

In addition, the area had cloudy conditions and rains, so experts could not determine the plume height. South areas, such as Tapojo, could be affected by the ashes.

The recent eruptions of Turrialba volcano affect soils and crops. Volcanic ash has a corrosive effect on the foliage, so it damages plants. It also releases emissions of gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), which in contact with rain, turns into sulfuric acid (H2SO4), causing what people call “acid rain”.
