Speedtest tested Internet speed in Central America

October 17, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Speedtest, an application used by mobile phone users in order to measure the Internet speed, made a diagnosis on the service offered by operators in Central American countries.

The report emphasizes that broadband and mobile connections are as important to consumers as the characteristics of smart phones. Hundreds of millions of people use the application every day.

According to the report, the seven Central American countries struggle to have the fastest broadband, however, that struggle has been affected by economic and social problems encouraged by unstable governments. The average loading speeds were fairly uniform across the region, however it cannot be described as “excellent” when compared to other countries.

In Costa Rica, Speedtest indicates that the download speed is 6.58 Mbps and the loading speed is 3.00 Mbps.

Regarding the mobile Internet, the average performance is 3.52 Mbps download internet speed and 1.74 Mbps loading speed. Mobile operators are located from fastest to slowest, in the following order:

Movistar (6.36 Mbps download internet speed and 5.6 mbps loading speed).
ICE (3.71 Mbps download internet speed and 1.41 mbps loading speed).
Claro (3.41 Mbps download and 1.47 mbps loading speed)

Except for Panama and Costa Rica, the average speed mobile Internet surpasses fixed broadband speed in the region.
