A Costa Rican is competing in a History Channel contest

A Costa Rican who has lived in Argentina for 7 years, is part of a team of students and college professors working in a kit that detects bacteria. He is a finalist in a History Channel contest.

Ellioth Sewell is studying Pharmacy and Biochemistry at the University of Buenos Aires. He moved to the South American country after winning a diplomatic scholarship.

“Colifinders” is the name of the project developed by 5 biochemistry students (including Sewell) and 3 professors.

It helps to detect pathogenic bacteria, such as enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli, very fast. That Bacteria is responsible for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, a disease caused by the presence of the toxin-producing bacteria, which is usually present in food and water. It is a serious disease that causes many complications and can lead to death.

The project was selected among 5,800 ideas in Latin America, which aims to change the quality of life by solving everyday problems.

“An idea to change history” is the name of the History Channel’s contest in which the students are participating. They need online votes.

The winning team will receive 60,000 dollars to fund the project.
