August 14, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The judicial authorities provide assistance to a tourist who reported being a victim of a sexual assault in the Tortuguero sector on Sunday.

As confirmed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the woman is an American citizen (initially reported as German).

The PococĂ Prosecutor’s Office reported that it opened an investigation against a man with last names Chaves Castillo, suspected of a crime of rape against a tourist of American nationality. The victim is being taken care of by the team specialized in gender violence issues, as part of the approach established in this type of cases,”

said the entity.

The main suspect is a Nicaraguan man. It is expected that after the investigation, the corresponding precautionary measures will be requested.

On Monday morning, the Ministry of Security confirmed the complaint against the man who apparently invited the foreigner to take a ride on a boat after a tour. There the man took advantage and committed the abuse. Before this, officers of the Operational Support Group (GAO) arrested the subject.

This case joins the terrible murders of two women on August 4th and 5th when tourists died while enjoying their vacations in Cobano and Tortuguero.
