Captain arrested over illegal fishing in Salinas Bay

August 24, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The National Coast Guard Service and the Public Force seized almost one kilometer of illegal trammels, in Salinas Bay, La Cruz de Guanacaste.

Authorities stopped the illegal fishing act in an operation from the Puerto Mora Coast Guard Station in the North Pacific.

These illegal nets devastate marine fauna, as they catch species of all kinds, including juvenile fish that have not reached their sexual maturity and animals that are not commercially exploitable.

The operation was carried out on Monday. Coast Guard captured a vessel that does not have a fishing license. Its captain fished with nine trammels, four of which did not comply with the size regulation.

Said captain, identified as UmaƱa, was arrested and placed under the orders of the Prosecutor’s Office of Liberia to be processed for illegal fishing.
