CNE: Heavy rains sent 18 families to shelters

October 28, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The heavy rains on Saturday caused 18 families to be relocated in shelters in Cóbano and Parrita, according to the National Commission of Emergencies (CNE) that reported rains in the North Zone, as well as in the Pacific.

The entity issued a green alert (preventive) in the Northern Region, the Caribbean, the Central Pacific and the South Pacific, as well as the cantons of Liberia, La Cruz, Tilarán and Bagaces in Guanacaste, and the canton of Sarapiquí in Heredia.

The IMN report indicates the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone remains very active, and the gradual increase in the intensity of the trade winds and intermittent rains and a possible electrical storms affect the sites with the alert.

Wálter Fonseca, liaison officer of the Commission, informed that in Cóbano several roads and streets were flooded.

The Mixed Institute of Social Assistance (IMAS) assessed sending aid to another 2,000 families that have been affected by rains. The institution said they have served 1,221 families in Puntarenas and Guanacaste, with an investment of ₡276 million to cover basic needs.
