On Saturday, Costa Rica celebrated the 70th anniversary of the abolition of the army with official acts in Plaza de la Democracia and the National Museum.

The President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, his cabinet, as well as diplomats, legislators and former members of the government participated in the event.

During the celebration, Alvarado announced a bill to modify the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (RECOPE), the country’s intention to host the Conference of the Parties (COP25) of the United Nations, as well as the granting of the merit for democracy and peace to Christiana Figueres.

In addition, he used the opportunity to grant the desk of Pepe Figueres to the historic center in San Ramón that bears his name, being a heritage asset. Also, the children of the National System of Music Education (SINEM) from León XIII sang the hymn to the abolition of the army in front of the audience.
