Costa Rican army ants attack and become famous

August 19, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The attack of Costa Rican “warrior” ants on a beehive has gone viral around the world. International news networks have presented the event in the United States, Europe, and South America.

The video that was recorded in one of the offices of the Guanacaste National Park shows the ants destroying a wasp comb.

Park ranger Julio Díaz posted the video on his Facebook wall and never imagined how many reactions he was going to get. In fact, the official who is a park ranger specializing in forest fires said he has received messages from all over the planet.

This is normal here in Guanacaste. We know them as the arrieras or warrior ants. In the forest, they destroy everything and attack. We also see them as a blessing, because when they enter a house they kill all the plagues,”

explained Díaz.

The video was recorded on July 30th at 1:30 p.m. Now it has more than half a million views and it has been shared more than eight thousand times. Díaz explained that the ants are not on any sort of cord. They hold on to each other and create a chain to execute the attack.

Díaz has been a park ranger for more than 37 years and works in the Guanacaste Conservation Area.
