Court gives way to peace in Colombia

July 19, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, celebrated on Monday the decision of the Constitutional Court to endorse a plebiscite as a mechanism of countersignature of the final agreement with the FARC guerrillas to end half a century of armed conflict.

Colombians have been given the green light to approve the peace agreement with our vote,”

said the head of state, recalling the “solemn commitment” he made since the beginning of the negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 2012.

With the Court’s consent, President Santos may report his intention to call the plebiscite to the Congress, so that Colombians would vote “yes” or “no” to the peace agreements that the government is preparing to sign with the FARC.
