Days are numbered for shanty town inhabited by illegal immigrants

January 14, 2014 by Staff News Writer

Triangle of Solidarity (INFOGRAPHIC GN)

At least 180 families will have to be relocated from an illegal housing development named the Triangle of Solidarity, in Goicoechea. The move is necessary to accommodate the construction of a 2 km. bypass on the Circunvalación in the second half of the year. Many of the homes in question illegally occupy government land, and officials lack solutions for relocation.

The Mixed Institute for Social Aid (IMAS) supports the idea of making payments to those relocated. However, the institution said payments could only be made to individuals who have legal presence in the country. The 2012 census identified 765 illegal immigrants who live in the shanty town.
