Drones will be used to deliver medicine in Talamanca

August 29, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) was authorized to contract courier services to deliver medicine in Talamanca and Valle de la Estrella. To do this, CCSS will use drones, unmanned aerial vehicles.

Consorcio Zipline will be in charge of drones and the project will cost around 26,000 dollars per month (14 million colones). This amount will cover the delivery of 13,200 prescriptions in these areas.

If a person needs additional prescriptions, less than 2 dollars each will be charged.

This project aims to benefit 18,000 people including indigenous communities like Bribri, Cabécar and Ngobe-Bugle, who live in Costa Rica-Panama border. This service will also benefit Ebais of Cahuita, Bamboo, Margarita, Valle Rose, Penshurt,Sepeque, Katsi and Amubri.

Authorities intend to decrease time when delivering medicines, to facilitate drugs to patients in order to heal and timely access to treatments.
