Egalitarian marriage project divides the PAC

December 13, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The proposed equal marriage law divides the legislative faction of the ruling Citizen Action Party (PAC).

Four of the 13 legislators oppose a call made by the leadership of the political group last week to back this initiative, which allows homosexual couples to have the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Those who object to the egalitarian marriage initiative are Javier Cambronero, Nidia Jiménez, Marlene Madrigal and Marco Vinicio Redondo.

This group of legislators rather endorse the draft of coexistence societies, which would legalize certain rights for homosexual couples.

According to a statement sent by the 4 lawmakers, they recognize and respect the property and personal rights of same-sex couples, such as inheritance rights, insurance and medical visits.

In a joint statement, the Political Commission, the National Executive Committee, the Commission for Studies and Programs, and the National Youth Directory of the party expressed their support for the egalitarian marriage project last week and asked the President of the Republic, Luis Guillermo Solís, to convene extraordinary sessions of Congress.
