First tropical storm in the eastern Pacific in 2017

May 10, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The first storm in the eastern Pacific in 2017, named Adrian, broke a record as it formed off the coast of Mexico on an unusually early date this year, according to the local National Hurricane Center.

Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said that by forming days before the onset of the hurricane season, Adrian became the earliest tropical cyclone since satellite records exist.

The previous record belonged to Hurricane Alma in 1990.

Adrian’s eye is located 690 km southeast of the port city of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca, southern Mexico. But the coast is not in danger.

Adrian is moving northwest about 5 miles per hour (7km / h) and it’s expected to gradually turn west-northwest on Thursday,”

wrote the NHC in a statement.

It has maximum sustained winds of 65 km / h that extend up to 110 km from its center.

In January 2016, another cyclone anomaly occurred in the Atlantic, when the hurricane formed earlier than ever before in almost 80 years. The last time such a thing had happened was in 1938.

The Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15th to November 30th, while the Atlantic hurricane season starts a little later, on June 1st.
