Floods and landslides reported in Grecia and San Carlos

May 21, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Heavy rains on Sunday night and Monday afternoon caused floods and small landslides in several areas of the country.

According to the report of the National Emergency Commission (CNE), 16 incidents were reported, 10 of them due to flooding in communities such as Palmares, Grecia and the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

In San Carlos, it was necessary to evaluate landslides, which, fortunately, did not put any family at risk.

Ten local emergency committees were activated to carry out inspections in the communities. But the CNE, the Traffic Police and other authorities also had to monitor the waves in Caldera, especially due to the large number of people who went to the area to observe the behavior of the sea.

Between May 13th and 19th, the CNE representatives dealt with six incidents due to strong winds, 34 landslides, 50 inspection requests, 68 floods , 10 sheltered families, 55 homes with some type of damage and six roads that were blocked.

Incidents have been reported in 43 cantons, most of them in Coto Brus, Desamparados and Puntarenas.
