Foreigners can drive in the country with a simple procedure

January 21, 2018 by Staff News Writer

In 2017, 9750 national and foreign people got their license approved. With this procedure the owners of the document are authorized to drive in Costa Rica the same vehicles that their foreign license authorizes.

When doing so, the expiration characteristics and other specifications will be the same as the ones in the foreign license.

The General Directorate of Road Education has enabled this service in the 13 locations of the country. The process can be done on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The only requirement is that foreigners must have at least three months of living in Costa Rica.

We hope that with 1 year of offering the service in all our headquarters, more people can advise nationals and especially foreigners who come to live in the coastal areas of the country, to carry out the approval process in any regional headquarters of Road Education and not have to travel to San José,”

explained the MOPT official.

Hugo Jiménez, Director of Road Safety Education, explained that last year they received a large number of interested parties from other locations to carry out this process, which in some cases prevented them from meeting all the requests.

The service has a value of ₡ 5000 and does not require a prior appointment.
