From garbage to galleries: the art of recycling

November 5, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Tonny Salazar

Recyclable materials are Tony Salazar’s favorites to create art. Cans, cardboard, paper, aluminum and cassette tapes were used by this artist to create mosaics, landscapes, portraits of people, animals and even means of transport. He also uses other techniques such as watercolor, Indian ink with brush and cane, pyrography on leather, charcoal drawing, and sculpture on paper.

In his most recent collection called “EcoArte”, Salazar composed silhouettes of artists from video and audio cassette tapes, such as pop king Michael Jackson, the admired national archer Keylor Navas, and the old character from the Munsters tv show. These works were exhibited last weekend at the Antigono Gallery, located in Terramall.

Tony Salazar was the winner of the City 2013 Estampilla Ciudad de los niños Cartago award, which travels around the world representing Costa Rica. He also won the 2010 First National Place award thanks to his work Bienal de las Aguas. He has a workshop in Curribadat to teach all techniques he has learned throughout his career.

His most precious and possibly the most difficult work made so far is a mosaic of the late actress Marilyn Monroe, where he collected more than 1,300 one-inch pieces cut out of beer cans.
