Government concluded eviction from the Triangle of Solidarity

January 2, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Executive Power reported that finally, after 10 years, the eviction of the well-known Triangle of Solidarity, a human settlement located in Calle Blancos de Goicoechea that had to be eliminated to conclude the northern stage of the North Beltway road to connect it with Route 32.

According to the 2012 census, it was estimated that for that year the Triangle of Solidarity housed some 525 families. The first plans to mobilize this population began in 2014.

Initially, the Ministry of Housing had planned to relocate some 180 families to clean the line through which a viaduct would be built in that area; however, both that number and the transfer times varied with the passage of time.

The first 20 families were mobilized in June 2015 and by July 2016 it was announced that the eviction of 50 other families occupying the strip where the works would begin was completed.

After ten years of unsuccessful attempts, in less than seven months, a peaceful humanitarian eviction of an informal human settlement located in the sector known as the Triangle of Solidarity, which prevented the progress of the Arco Norte de Circunvalación project and its connection with Route 32. Always respecting human rights and with sensitivity to the social situation that this type of intervention entails, respecting the legislation, with leadership and strong inter-institutional coordination, it was possible to apply, for the first time in our country, a protocol of integral care of evictions,”

said the Presidency in a press release on Wednesday.

The northern section of the Circunvalación consists of 5.6 kilometers that go from La Uruca to Calle Blancos. The work began in September 2018 and the most complicated stage will begin in March.
