Government remains silent after general strike announcement

August 30, 2018 by Staff News Writer

At 9:30 a.m. on Thursday all unions in the country announced they will join the general and indefinite strike, which will affect all public services from September 10th. The government has remained silent after these declarations.

CRHoy tried to get statements from the head of Communication, Juan Carlos Mendoza, but at 2 p.m they said the government’s statement was not ready.

The union sectors across the country announced the indefinite strike against the tax plan proposed by the government and that is discussed in the Legislative Assembly.

This is the first national strike in the country in 18 years. The last time, in 2000, the unions opposed the so-called “ICE Combo”, and the demonstrations lasted for almost a month.

The tax plan in Congress is processed under a fast track. The project called the Law of Strengthening of Public Finances has touched sensitive spots in the population, since authorities intend to tax the basic basket, private education services, and health services with 2% VAT.

This isn’t the first time Zapote takes a few days to give statements about sensitive issues.
