Government will not block Uber

July 4, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The battle that is taking place in the streets between the formal taxi drivers and Uber is getting out of control. Vehicle assaults, death threats and more have occurred in recent days.

Once again, taxi drivers asked the government to block the application. However, from the Presidential House the answer is the same: it will not block Uber.

This was stated on Tuesday afternoon by the Minister of the Presidency, Sergio Alfaro, stating that the only thing they can do at this moment is requesting the intervention of the Traffic police.

We did not find legal support that gives us the ability to block an application. That could only be done by a judge of the Republic,”

said the hierarch.

Although they maintain that Uber is illegal, they insist there are no greater actions in the hands of the Executive Power.

We have a legal framework and we have insisted on the government that as long as that legal framework does not change, Uber’s activity is illegal and there is a necessary intervention of the Traffic Police when it detects illegal transportation of passengers,”

said Alfaro.

He was also emphatic that they cannot start stopping all private vehicles with one or two people in addition to the driver, since not all of them are working for Uber.

Regarding the violence and the attacks, the minister of the Presidency indicated that there is a clear instruction from President Luis Guillermo SolĂs of zero tolerance for these actions.
