Howler monkeys need help!

July 25, 2016 by Staff News Writer

In recent weeks, about 12 howler monkeys were electrocuted with electricity transmission lines in Guanacaste.

Many of these animals get seriously injured or do not survive the impact. As a result, conservation group Preserve Planet urged the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) to look for protection measures to help the monkeys.

We must demand the ICE to take action. In other places the problem has been solved by placing devices so animals do not climb. Rope bridges will help them to move from side to side,

stated the organization.

Last year, at least 12 monkeys died in Quepos and Manuel Antonio. For this reason, employers in the area placed ropes in the top of the trees so animals could move safely. ICE has also placed special insulating materials and devices on the power lines.
