ICE moves ancient petroglyph to protect it

April 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) decided to move a petroglyph with the aim of protecting this millennial piece that was built between 300 and 800 after Christ.

According to an ICE statement, the image recorded on rock was discovered in 2011 during operations for the construction of the Pailas I Geothermal Plant in Curubandé, Liberia.

The petroglyph was part of an indigenous cemetery found in an archaeological site called “El Blanco” and was transferred to the main entrance of Pailas I.

For Arturo Hernández, archaeologist of the Pailas Geothermal Project,

the transfer of this heritage has a great significance in the protection of the indigenous legacy, because it avoids the increasing looting of archeological pieces by unscrupulous people dedicated to the illicit trade of cultural property.”
