Four foreigners, two men and two women, were arrested on Thursday when authorities found $585,000 in cash in the room they rented in a hotel and determined they had entered Costa Rica illegally. The investigation started on Wednesday when the San Jose Municipal police responded to a report of suspicious activity at the hotel, Luz de Luna in barrio Escalante.

Officers entered the hotel in the guise to check permits, but after locating the group of Hondurans and Guatemalans, determined they could not produce a passport with the necessary entry stamps. Judicial authorities were called to investigate further and found the cash along with receipts for construction materials, suggesting the group was building a home in San Carlos.
