La Selva Biological Station will be an environmental management model

June 14, 2017 by Staff News Writer

La Selva Biological Station, located in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, will become a model of environmental management for the region, thanks to the economic support that the EARTH University and the Organization for Tropical Studies (OET) will receive from the United States Government, which will allow them to make improvements to their facilities.

The $1.3 million grant from the US Hospitals and Schools Abroad Program (ASHA) will allow the purchase of environmentally friendly technology and the construction of new spaces for scientific and educational management.

According to S. Fitzgerald Haney, the investment represents the desire of the North American country to continue working together with Costa Rica in the development of this type of projects.

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OET) will receive about $621 thousand with the aim of optimizing the management of La Selva Biological Station.

In addition, the contribution will serve to disseminate a sustainable construction model and make a more efficient use of the physical, economic and environmental resources that are used in research and education stations.

EARTH University will receive $700,000 to build new dormitories on its campus in Guácimo and La Flor, which will allow more students to be part of the short-term residency programs.

Since 2003, EARTH University has received 13 donations from the ASHA program, for a total of almost 8 million and a half dollars.
