Legislator Díaz proposed to reduce FEES budget

October 7, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Legislator Natalia Díaz, from Movimiento Libertario, proposed to reduce resources from the Special Fund for Higher Education (FEES), which is 28 billion colones out of the National Budget 2017, and move them to the Ministry of Public Security.

The legislator announced that she will present a motion in that regard to the budget draft, which is pending in the Committee on Financial Affairs of the Legislative Assembly.

Díaz explained that the increase proposed for the FEES is nearly 9% higher than the budget 2016, an amount that is over the inflation adjustment, which current rate is 1%.

She clarified that her intention is not to dismantle the FEES, which would have 440 billion colones.

The legislator declared that the tax on legal people is not the right way to raise additional resources to the Ministry of Public Security, as claimed the Government, because, if approved, they would not be generated immediately, but within 6 months to one year.
