Luis Antonio Sobrado: “The sovereign people have spoken”

February 4, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The results of the elections continue to make progress. On Sunday night, 46.70% of the votes had been counted and an almost probable second round was on the table.

Before the first results, the president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Luis Antonio Sobrado, gave a message to the citizens highlighting the electoral process and asking the candidates and parties to accept what Costa Ricans dictated.

The sovereign people have spoken,”

said the magistrate.

The collection of votes has already ended, but tonight is not the time to declare winners. The Receiving Boards are reporting to us the results they have accredited,”

said Sobrado.

The data was being updated every 20 minutes, adding more counted polling stations and pointing out to those who might go for the second round: almost certainly Fabricio Alvarado, against Antonio Álvarez or Carlos Alvarado.

The final scrutiny by the magistrates will begin on Tuesday, to identify the new legislators. This scrutiny will also certify whether the citizens elected their next President or if, on the contrary, we will have to choose them on April 1st between the two most voted candidates today,”

said Sobrado.

Up to Sunday night, nearly half of the polling stations had been scrutinized.
