Neighbors of Pérez Zeledón demonstrated against Hydroelectric Project

December 12, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Neighbors from several communities in the district of San Pedro de Pérez Zeledón, blocked the community bridge on December 10th.

Geiner Gamboa, a neighbor and communal leader, explained that they are against San Rafael Hydroelectric Project in their community.

Gamboa stated that there is an environmental feasibility document that ensures that the neighbors are in favor of the project, but that is not the case.

Our goal is that the government and the media pay attention to us because nobody has heard us so far. It was issued an environmental viability by SETENA that says that we are in favor, but that is a lie, 90% of the district is against, we are opposed due the irregularities of the project. For example, the water intake is in a place that is classified by the National Emergency Commission as “high risk”, which is Zapotal fault. People do not want this project,

expressed the communal leader.

About 300 people from communities such as Fátima, San Jerónimo, San Pedro and San Rafael participated in the blockade.
