Orotina Airport won’t be built

December 6, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Is the international airport of Orotina a project that was born dead? Not even the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation is convinced of the need to build such an ambitious air terminal. The answer is yet to come, but to date all the signs indicate that the initiative will not even take off from the paper.

The intention was announced during the administration of Luis Guillermo Solís (2014-2018). Between 2015 and 2016, the Executive Power, with the then president as the protagonist, boasted – repeatedly – the ambitious project to build the main air terminal in the country in that canton of Alameda to relieve Juan Santamaría.

The geographical conditions and the proximity to the Central Valley positioned Orotina as the perfect point for the work. Despite being a “country project”, estimated at $2.5 billion, the international airport looks like it will remain in the trunk of unfinished proposals.

On December 5th, when the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) presented a series of millionaire investments in airport infrastructure, the name Orotina did not appear anywhere and the minister, Rodolfo Méndez, said the conditions for this project are not here yet.
