Poás, Turrialba and Rincón de la Vieja volcanoes show intense activity

May 23, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The volcanoes Poás, Turrialba and Rincón de la Vieja remain in constant activity, the latter recorded an eruption after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, while the former are emanating gases and steam.

Eliécer Duarte, an expert at the Volcanology and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) explained that in the last few hours, Poás Volcano has recorded steam emanation.

The vigorous and constant emanation of steam has been maintained, which has to do with the recycling of the lake by groundwater and this produces high columns, which are observed for many kilometers,”

explained Duarte.

In the case of Turrialba, it has also recorded steam and magmatic gases.

In the past few days there has been an intermittent discharge of ash, and now it has been low. No ash has been seen, last week it was intermittent for seven days. The output of energy is enough to lift those plumes from sometimes up to one kilometer above the summit,”

added the expert.
