“Pollo” led Costa Rican drug gang from Nicaraguan prison

March 7, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The gang dismantled on Tuesday morning operated despite the fact its leader was imprisoned in Nicaragua. Martínez Fajardo, also known as “Pollo”, had designated “area managers” to conduct his illegal operations.

Wálter Espinoza, director of the OIJ, said that the orders and guidelines for the gang’s illegal business in Costa Rica came from the northern country, so the criminal organization worked as any regular company.

He gave the orders by phone to people located in our country, establishing the guidelines of the criminal organization. He has two area managers. One of them was already arrested. His name is Hernández, also known as “Crucitas”. We are still trying to locate the other one. These two leaders were in charge of controlling four criminal sub-groups.

They have a well-structured illegal organization, with an “accounting department”, employees with fixed salaries, established functions and an internal system of discipline based on violence, murder, threats and blood,”

explained Espinoza.

So far, more than 20 people have been arrested in 45 raids, and about 20 more are expected to be arrested soon for their links to the gang.

Some of the people arrested include five women, who would be responsible for storing and processing the drug, specifically crack cocaine and marijuana.

The OIJ director assured that this is the most important and massive operation they have conducted so far, with about 600 officers and 40 judges.
