Red taxis deny rumor of collective service

March 30, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Wednesday afternoon, an audio broadcast on social networks began circulating ensuring that the red taxi drivers would work as collectives, from April 1st and throughout the month.

The audio claims this measure would apply to the main routes through which buses run in San José, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

According to the recording, this aims to make a call to the government that does not want to help them and choses to protect those who perform the service illegally in cars that are not concessioned to be used as taxis.

It’s the only way we have to avoid losing our concessions and going bankrupt… We will be working with prices that are very affordable for the user,”

says the recording.

However, Gilbert Ureña, a spokesman for the National Taxi Drivers’ Forum, told the press they have not made such an agreement. On the contrary, they have respected the provision of services in each of the sectors.

Although we are very hurt that the government of the Republic is not acting against the informal service,”

added Ureña, who also asked his fellow taxi drivers to desist from the idea.

Ureña does not know who sent the audio and ARESEP claims that it is illegal for the taxi driver to charge users a value determined by a collective service.
