Residents become lifeguards to rescue tourists in Parrita

December 26, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Brett Schroeder left his country and the life he led in Texas to give a hand to tourists who visit the beaches of Costa Rica. He combines his tourism business with the leadership of a group of lifeguards in Esterillos Oeste.

This group of people are neighbors who grew up on the coast and know the beaches and their currents, and do this voluntarily without receiving any payment.

The Coast Guard Academy trained them in various techniques to perform rescues safely. Now, they are considered as allies of security on the beaches of the country by the Ministry of Security.

The community leader, Rosemary Chamberlain, explained that the members of the group are contacted while they are in their free time and show great dedication to protect the tourists who arrive to the beaches near Parrita.
