January 23, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A woman who entered the country with a travel route from Italy to Spain to Costa Rica, was arrested by the Drug Control Police (PCD) of the Ministry of Public Security, when they discovered a load of money not reported and hidden in her carry-on luggage.

The 23-year-old Cuban woman, named Jiménez, had no record. She was arrested when she entered the country through the Juan Santamaría International Airport, located in the province of Alajuela.

The PCD reported that the money was scattered in small packages hidden in the carry-on luggage. The cash amounted to 36,460 euros, which in colones were 25,921,966.20 at today’s exchange rate.

The foreigner, when approached by Drug Control agents, indicated that she had been entering Costa Rica as a tourist and had her return scheduled for February 17th. She was transferred to the Prosecutor’s Office of Alajuela for transporting money not reported to the authorities.

It is worth mentioning that the amount of cash that the woman carried amounted to what’s established by law, which is $ 10,000 or its equivalent.
