Tourists will have to carry $500 to visit the country

December 10, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Shirley Diaz, from the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC) proposed that all people visiting the country with a tourist visa should demonstrate they carry at least $500 either in cash or in a credit or debit card.

This will serve as a border reinforcement measure in the face of possible new massive migrations.

It is necessary to carry out immigration reforms that guarantee that those who enter the country have a minimum amount to cover basic needs such as lodging and food during their stay in Costa Rica,”

said the legislator.

Díaz explained that the measure would be for all people entering national territory, even in those cases where Costa Rica is used as a transit country.

The only different treatment would be for those citizens who apply for refuge, as well as minors, for example, if an adult enters with two children, they only have to confirm $500. The legislator said that this is something that already occurs in countries like Panama or the United States.

The image of the country has been recently hit after the femicide of the Venezuelan-American Carla Estafaniak, who joins the Spanish Arantxa Lopez, and the Mexican María Mathus. They died at the hands of illegal foreigners.
