Turrialba Volcano has not produced ash for 3 weeks

December 6, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Turrialba Volcano has not emanated ash since November 13th, but it has maintained a constant emission of gas and steam.

Eliécer Duarte, expert from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), said the activity of the colossus has fallen compared to previous months, but that does not mean it is dormant.

What has happened are very specific events, not like the ones from the previous two months. The tremor has disappeared. It comes in very short periods and with very low intensity,”

explained Duarte.

According to the expert, in Turrialba you can expect any scenario.

The volcano has been at such a level that the slightest imbalance can cause overpressure and that can produce the constant and passive output of ash,”

said the expert.
