Turrialba Volcano registers new eruption

April 4, 2017 by Staff News Writer

After a decrease in activity, Turrialba Volcano erupted again at 6 o’clock on Tuesday morning.

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica of the National University (OVSICORI-UNA) reported that the colossus maintains a vigorous and ash-laden plume.

At 6:01 local time, there was an eruption in the Turrialba volcano, with a column that rises 200 meters above the crater and 3,540 meters above sea level,”

published the institution on its Facebook page.

Eliécer Duarte, a volcanologist from OVSICORI, commented that

the plume is abundant, in progress and loaded with ash. It is likely that the material reaches the protected part of Braulio Carrillo Park and communities such as Moravia and Coronado,”

said the expert.

The wind has a speed between 20 and 55 km/h with direction towards the northwest.
