Two quakes more in the South

August 27, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Sunday morning, at 11:24 a.m. and 11:59 a.m. there were two more earthquakes in the South Zone of the country , specifically southwest of Bahía Ballena, in the canton of Osa. These add up to the other three quakes that occurred at dawn.

The two recent earthquakes had magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.3, respectively, which has generated the concern of the inhabitants of the country.

However, experts call for calm, ensuring that in this area the tectonic fault is very weak and tremors of around 4 degrees of magnitude are very common.

Marino Protti, expert from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) said that

The Pacific zone is very weak, causing seismicity of this type quite frequently. You could say it is normal because the fault is very weak.”

During the morning, three earthquakes occurred, the strongest at 4:38 a.m., with a magnitude of 5.3 and a depth of one kilometer, according to the report of the National Seismological Network. Before that, at 2:27 a.m. and at 3:09 a.m. there were two tremors with magnitudes of 3.8 and 4.4, respectively.

The origin of the earthquakes is the subduction of the Coco plate, according to experts.
