Union took operations room in San Juan de Dios Hospital

September 28, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Ileana Balmaceda, Director of San Juan de Dios Hospital, denounced that union officials took over the operations rooms of the medical center, blocking the attention of emergencies.

The union took the operations room and this means they are not letting us operate or take care of emergencies, nor are they letting patients with cancer undergo the surgeries that were already prepared to start start at 7 am,”

said Balmaceda on Thursday.

San Juan de Dios has 21 operating rooms, but they have only been able to operate with five intermittently. One of these was ready for the urgent cancer patients. However, Balmaceda said that the trade unionists entered the room, without asking for authorization, and did not allow the teams to work.

The Hospital coordinated with officials of the CAIS of Puriscal to carry out the surgeries, while a trade unionist who works as a patient assistant, decided which cases would go to the operations room.

This has reached alarming levels. We are going to take the corresponding legal actions,”

warned the director.
